Dexter is one of the (sadly, many) shows that can't figure out how to make a prolonged romantic relationship interesting, so after they

SPOILERS

fridged Rita, Dexter had Random New Girlfriend of the Season, which involved a lot of dumbly contrived reasons for why the girlfriend was gone at the end of the last season, and strongly affected said girlfriend's characterization for the worse because she was never intended to last. Hell, the only reason Hannah's back for another go is because the show is ending, and the one thing prolonged relationships are allowed to do (in the hands of shitty writers) is Live Happily Ever After, which is the desired end game.

They can, however, write a prolonged platonic relationship relatively well, which is why Dexter+Deb seems so much more compelling, at times o_o (And also why when they hinted they might make them a couple I was ready to quit the series.)
