I need something productive to do!

(Anonymous) 2013-09-18 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I am going to be stuck at a public library every weekday for 1-3 hours. I have my kindle and there is free wifi. I want to find something productive to do during that time. Yes I know it is a library, but I don't want to read fiction books and I don't know what non-fiction books I want to look at.

I am planning on going to South Korea next September. Can anyone recommend some language apps? Or any other kindle apps you can learn stuff with. Or books. I just want to learn something (that I can do quietly), while I sit around. Heck, I would even take some free online classes or something.

Stuck at a public library? Stuck?!

Stuck as in no ride home for that amount of time. D: This isn't an episode of Welcome to Night Vale.

You're going to be in a library. If you want to learn a language, why not pick up a few books on language over there? Or look up other books about hobbies or other things you're interested in?

They don't have any on Korean. They only have one book period on South Korea (which I read)! :C

Anki is a really good flashcard program. It's desktop mostly, with support for some devices. I don't see Kindle there, but there is a webapp as well. You can browse the Korean decks people have shared here. I can't vouch for any of them though.

Ohhh. I am definitely going to look at this. :D If nothing else, I can make my own flashcards.

Anki is pretty good for flashcards. Your library probably has cds or books on tapes for Korean, or they can get some.

You are the second person to recommend Anki. I am going to look at iin depth this weekend. :D

Just a thought, but you could spend that time browsing the nonfiction books to determine what you'd be interested to read. Maybe even some language books?

And I seriously hope you're a troll because your whole attitude about books in general makes me want to scream and tear my hair out and rant about how fucking useless kids are these days. Fortunately, there are plenty of people here I consider kids who offset your mind-boggling attitude.

I love books. But I don't want to read fiction books. And their non-fiction section is sparse. I mean, I guess I can read one of their 500 outdated books on car repair (you know the ones http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/518UdB%2BZDmL._SL500_AA300_.jpg). Or those awesome Idiot's Guides to HTML and The Internet.

Because if a person doesn't like or want to read fiction, it makes them useless?

Not everyone likes libraries and not everyone likes to read fiction. Different hobbies for different people.

And not all libraries are pleasant places to spend 15 hours a week. I love the Central library in Los Angeles, but I was once followed around by a homeless man who wanted to sniff my hair. At the Swiss Cottage library in London, someone tried to steal my shoes. They were on my feet at the time, so he wasn't successful. Some libraries only stock current bestsellers and cookbooks from the 1970s, which is boring unless you love porcupine meatballs and avocado boats.

Yeah, you're underestimating the quality, not to say funding, of some local libraries. Mine's filled with crap, fiction-wise, so yes, it's possible to be in a library and not enjoy it.

...Honestly, to learn a language you *really* need to be learning from a teacher/tutor face to face. Books, flashcards, and apps help - but if that's all you've got? Chances are it's not going to end up working out too well, particularly when it comes to understanding people speaking/speaking yourself.

Mmmmm. I'd be happy with just the alphabet and common phrases, TBH. My job doesn't want me to be fluent (I will be teaching English).

I know what is in the self help/improvement education. I have read all the books I am interested in (Using body language, dealing with anxiety and depression, learning about South Korea [a grand total of one book in the whole library], some cook books, and how to be more assertive). I have walked circles around the place. I know what they have to offer, and I am not interested in what it left.

Look up and summarise the history of chairs for me becase thinking about it - many animals make homes but what animal makes a platform so they not sit on floor - and only a few cultures actually even have chairs so....

I wonder if I could write papers for students for money. D:

One of the best resources I found for learning was the website 'Talk to Me in Korean'; they have free podcasts with accompanying PDFs. What I would do is download the podcasts for my MP3 player and the PDFs for my eReader and just go to town. ^^

for non-fiction books I recommend Bill Bryson. He did several travel books, a book about 'the history of the home', and a (really fun!) linguistics book.

is your local library affiliated with other libraries? My library doesn't have the best selection of books, so I just use interlibrary loan and borrow from other libraries in the network, it's how I got Italian on CD for the car (which failed miserably, but I tried!)

my sincere apologies then, because I live in a big city and I have access to so many books that my intended reading list, mostly non-fiction, is over 100 long.

try an inter library loan of language books. like the culture shock! (no really that's what the series is called) for Korea. Asian cookbooks. the 24 hour chef on how to crash course in meta learning. ILL may take a while to get to you but it's not like they can deny it.

right now I'm reading "medusa's gaze and vampires bite" about the science of monsters. appropriate for upcoming Halloween and its nonfiction.
