It's actually just my SO and my daughter. My phone is a little Motorola - nearly identical to this one, actually.

Got it in 2002, i think, and it's starting to not work reliably.

My SO and daughter both have 'smart phones'. They keep pushing me to get a smart phone. I don't *want* a smart phone. And all i get from them are jokes about how the earth is flat and maybe i should stop using my computer and wow, it's annoying. Thanks for being totally unhelpful, family, and not helping me *at all* when i want to talk about what phone i'd actually like to get. ARGH.

That said...Maybe try being sarcastic? 'Cause I mean...if you've asked them to stop they kind of brought that kind of thing on themselves when they do it.

Dude, i need a new phone, so it's discussed. It's called 'living in a household with the people you share a life with'.

And trust me, i tell them they're being fuckheaded morons about it. I'm no wilting flower. I'm *annoyed* and *venting*.

-rolls eyes- No need to get pissy with *me* because you apparently can't say "I need a new phone" and decide by yourself what to get.

And frankly? I have no way of knowing what you do or don't call them. Plenty of people *are* wilting flowers around people they live with - just like plenty of people post here for advice.

Where did i ask for advice? I'm venting. I'm frustrated at the bullshite and am tossing it out there so that i can get rid of the stress. I nowhere asked for 'advice'.

And yeah, i'm pissy at you because you don't seem to *get* that i'm venting, and i ask my SO about phones because i don't know all that much about them, and wanted to know what he thought. He's into tech a lot more than me, he knows what all the specs mean, etc. I'm *annoyed* that i didn't get legitimate help from *him*, and so came here to VENT.

Do you get it now? Sheesh. You're the only person that replied to me that seems to be having difficulties with the concept.

I'll admit that I'd be lost without my smart phone, but if you don't want one or won't use one then that's that; they should try to help find you another that you'll like and stop the teasing. I always help my mom pick out a cell, and she's the same way; isn't even remotely interested in using one. *shrugs*

Yeah, i just don't have any need to read my email at the grocery store. I have a computer - that's where i read email. And if i'm 'out of town' for a couple days, i can...not read my email. It's not that big a deal.

What is this obsession with what kind of phone someone else has?! I had a Blackberry that kind of looks like that motorola for the longest time, the only reason I got a new phone at all was because it selectively started eating all my incoming/outgoing texts and then freezing randomly.

I have a Samsung Galaxy right now, and I admit that I adore it, but I could happily have this phone for the next ten years or longer unless it broke, because it does everything I need a phone to do for me (and then a whole lot more).

Man, i do not know. Like it matters. So i don't have a phone like their phone - why is it such an issue? So weird.

If you want just a 'dumb' phone then used might be the way to go...when my beloved flip phone started to go on the fritz I went to the cell phone store to look for another, and the choices were super shitty flip phone, good-quality 'dumb phone', or smart phone just a little more expensive than the good-quality flip phone. I picked a smart phone whose operation was intuitive to me (some of them were confusing but one made sense) and just used it with my SIM card for the flip phone, so no data plan. I basically used it like a dumb phone, just occasionally googling when I had wi-fi.

I'm starting to think it's either whatever phone i can stand to use without a data plan or a tracphone. I will *not* pay hundreds of dollars for a phone. That's just stupid. I was looking at one online that was .99 cents at the AT&T website, but the reviews were bad.

My parents are like that! I feel bad when I complain, because, wow, I'm annoyed by my parents wanting to get me something expensive, first-world problems doesn't even begin to cover it. But it always drives me up a wall how people react to my "old" technology like it's some horrible plague I have to live with. It works. I like it. If you can't live without buying the newest thing every two months, then you're the weird one. Leave me the fuck alone.

I'd flip my shit if that happened to me. My SO doesn't have or want a smart phone and I've witnessed people give him shit about it so many times. Even both sets of our parents have smart phones and give him crap about not having one. So what?! Lay off! We have enough trouble dealing with this when we try to find a new phone for him that he'll really like. It's almost impossible to find a phone that isn't a smart phone, not to mention what incredible assholes the people at the phone place are when we go in there.

There aren't many basic phones still on the market but he went through a couple that Verizon carries before sticking with the LG Exalt. He likes the size, keypad, and functions better than the Samsung flip phones they had and the LG Revere (which he absolutely hated). I don't know about other carriers, but Verizon gave him a trial period with the phones and he could bring it back within like a week if he didn't like it (which is how he went through every flip phone they carry). They still have some other basic phones that aren't flip phones but I don't know anything about how they are because he prefers flip phones.

Sorry about your family being so unsupportive :( Good luck finding a new phone though!

Thanks! It really just annoys me to get all these 'Luddite' comments. All i want is an opinion on non-smart phones, not the reasons they 'suck'. (And those reasons are always 'because i wouldn't choose that phone' reasons. Not helpful!)

I hope the phone place people are helpful. I swear i'm gonna buy a tracphone if i have to.

Ugh I get it! My friends are the same way. I don't want a smartphone. I don't want to be addicted to it and I hate how my friends (I'm in my mid-20s) will pay more attention to their phones than me when we go out.

I have an old Samsung Alias II and the keys have stopped working, but verizon sent me this pantech global phone to use and I sort of like it, but I couldn't tell you if they consider it a smartphone or what, I just know it works overseas.

I also don't want a smartphone because I don't want to pay for it. I'm trying to save money so I limit what I pay out on a monthly basis. Plus I can't use my phone while at work so I wouldn't have much use for it.

Yup. I have no interest in looking at my phone when i'm out and about, especially with my family or friends. I'm out and about with *them*, not my mini-computer.

Money is, too, an issue. I don't want to pay for a friggin' data plan.

I definitely, DEFINITELY feel you, my family is the same way. "Oh, you're so old fashioned!" I don't want to be on the Internet all the time, and I really don't want a data plan, which seems like a massive waste of money. I want to text and call people as easily as possible. There's nothing wrong with that. The fact that something is newer does not make it better.

On the freakin' nose. Calling and txting. That's all i want. Why is that so hard to understand?

Haha, I feel your pain. My phone's an old flip phone and my friends (gently) mock me for it, though they don't pester me to upgrade. Even if I had the money, I honestly don't see the point. I hardly ever use my phone unless it's an emergency, and I don't like/need to check my e-mail constantly when I'm out. I hate texting, and I strongly dislike how so many people with smartphones fall into the bad habit of constantly checking it.

I'll probably upgrade sometime, but it's unlikely to be a smartphone. Too expensive, and I don't want a contract.

Yup. I have a computer for email and LJ/DW, etc. I don't need to do that stuff on my phone, and so long as *i* like the phone i have, i just don't get why it's such a big damn deal.
