Re: Non-fandom confessions

I'm really fucking fat and I hate it so much. I want to do something about it, but the thought of even going outside for even a walk makes me nervous as hell. I won't even consider a treadmill since I get bored staring at a wall and it makes me self conscious to do more than a fast walk because I have this fear that I'll make the whole floor shake. It doesn't help I love candy and soda (I work in fast food, so the temptation is always there) and buying myself rewards doesn't work because I'll just buy things I want anyway.

If you want to exercise you should distract yourself. Do you have a TV or a smart phone? (Or a walkman, CD player, etc?) Exercising is much less of a burden (well, at least to me it is) if you have something to distract you from it. Watching tv or listening to music (or a podcast, or an audiobook, etc) is a huge help and might make you more likely to stick with it. In the past when exercising I felt the same way; now I listen to playlists on 8tracks, watch tv or listen to WTNV and I don't get bored.

I put music on my phone but I just can't quite get the courage to start.

It can be daunting to start, and if you've had disappointing or bad experiences with weight loss or exercise in the past that makes it even worse, but once you get into a routine it becomes less intimidating. You don't need to do thirty minutes a day or even in one setting when you first start out, and remember - anything is better than nothing.

I hope it works out for you!

What helped me to start was walking somewhere rather than just walking. It reduced the "God, are people looking at me? Are they judging me?" paranoia because, hey, I had stuff to do and places to be. I know this isn't feasible in all areas, but can you do one or two of your regular errands on foot?

(Also, I feel you on the treadmill thing. Boring as hell even when I've got the TV on, and I just feel terrified and unstable when I try to jog.)

Sadly I live in the middle of suburbia in Southern California and everything is driving distance.

I actually like the treadmill because its boring - I don't want to think while exercising. and it helps me get through podcasts (night vale and caustic soda).

and who says you have to run or jog?

I like walking the dog because it gets both of us outside of the house. ditto in just walking somewhere.

I know I should do a lot more, but I just have t been in the mood. but when I got fast food the other day I got apple slices instead of fries. it's the little attainable things and sticking to them that improve health.

also, Netflix has exercise DVDs if that's worth a try

oh, and on the treadmill, I swear once you get past 20 minutes it gets much better

I walk my neighbor's dog because I'm like you in the sense I just can't bring myself to get started and take a walk in my neighborhood.

I'm also a soda addict and I was desperate to quit (I didn't, but I cut WAY back) so I started using water flavorings in bottles of water. I bought a carbonater and I carbonate some tap water, add in a little bit of flavoring, and I get my fizzy sweetness that way. It's been a big help and for 3 months I didn't drink a single soda. But there are some foods that just taste better with a soda so after I'd gotten well beyond the constant cravings, I allowed myself to drink soda with those things again.

Could you borrow someone's dog and take it for walks? Or even be a paid dog-walker? Then your reward would be money for exercising. Plus when you're walking a dog most people pay more attention to the dog than the walker, if you're worried about that. Also, I would reconsider the treadmill ban, if you've got the space for one. If you spend a lot of time online or on a computer, you can walk while you post to fandomsecrets or watch tv or whatever. Even walking fairly slowly, an hour should get you two or three miles. Plus if you're walking while you watch tv, it's harder to do the sort of mindless eating that's so easy when staring at a screen. Treadmills show up used on craigslist and stuff all the time because people end up using them as towel racks, so if you pick up a used one and don't like it, just sell it again. As for the soda thing, there's that expensive stevia soda. Candy is harder, because lots of the sugar-free stuff tastes like crap or doubles as a laxative. And maybe figure out why you're nervous even thinking about exercising, because you won't lose any weight just worrying about it, and the worst thing exercise will do is make you put on a few pounds of muscle. Worst case scenario you look the same but are in better shape. Talk to a doctor if you have access to one, and good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Wouldn't it be awkward to use a computer whilst on a treadmill?

My roommate does it all the time; provided it's a laptop, I don't see a problem. Also apparently treadmill desks are a thing that exists.

There's nothing that says you have to stare at a wall whilst using a treadmill, you could use it whilst watching TV

And I've seen people reading books whilst using the exercise bike at my local gym
