what's your favorite supernatural creature and why?

[personal profile] queerwolf 2013-09-21 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know that I have a favorite. I like both vampires and werewolves for different reasons. Also like ghosts and magic users.

Ghosts, by a pretty big amount. Ghosts are so freaking cool. Then werewolves are second, I guess, and then everything else is further down the chain.

Ghosties and witches are really high up there.

I also like manticores and foo dogs.

I love Will O'Wisps. A deadly creature that traps people into horrible ends, but only if they are really stupid. Basically if they are stupid enough to follow a Will O'Wisp, they deserve to die. I like creatures like that which are otherwordly and dangerous, but give people with a bit of sense a free pass.

Best bit is that if you live near a river or a marsh, you can actually go and see the real phenomena that Will O'Wisps are based on when the autumn mists rise in the evening, and you can track them as long as you shine a flashlight dead on the mists and keep your eyes dead on the reflection as you track it. You need to start by shining the flashlight on the bit of mist closest to the water to make it work. It is a beautifully cool effect if you go with it.

Mothman, Black-Eyed Kids, pretty much any kind of cryptid, dragons and sea monsters, zombies, the Grim Reaper, anything mentioned in Greek mythology, wacky monsters from Japanese folklore... I think I just like crazy made-up creatures/people as a whole.

Oh, and I've developed a major fondness for Bigfoot since coming to the northwest.

Gods. One of my favorite parts of fantasy worldbuilding is setting up the pantheon, what they actually do, and how mortals interpret that and worship them.

I don't think I really have a fave fave. But angels as giant awful beings you can't look At and not humans with wings are pretty cool

Angels as in the type for theology are scary as all out and awesome. I would never want to meet an Angel if those were the type I would run into.

I like both kinds but I love it when they're portrayed as angels from theology, angels are scary bro, not cuddly and sweet.

Pookas. Not the 'big white fluffy bunny' ones from Harvey, but the 'turns into a horse, drowns you and eats you' kind. They are so cool.

MUMMIES

Mummies are rad as fuck and I wish they'd make a reappearance in literature.

I also really like merpeople.

I have a strange affinity for Pontianaks* due to their dual killer/mother nature.

*A Pontianak is a female vampire that can both kill and love and have human children if a person marries them.

Eldritch abominations! I love things that are beyond the scope of human comprehension, which ascribe to no human ideals or ideas of morality or even of possibility. They scare the pants off of me and I love them for it.

Ghosts, too, because they're equally distant and alien but at the same time, they're also the essence of what makes someone human; emotion, fixation, 'soul' if you want to get spiritual about it.
