Beauty pageant trainwreck in Ireland

In Ireland we have a show called The Late Late Show, first hosted by Gay Byrne (Gaybo), then by Pat "The Plank" Kenny and now by Ryan Tubridy.

Anyway, recently an American child beauty pageant tried to set up in Ireland, but the hotel pulled out due to complaints from members of the public.

The three ladies interviewed were the mother of Evan Wood (apparently a famous child beauty pageant star in the US), the American organiser of the pageant and the mother of some Irish child beauty pageant competitor.

I missed the first part of the interview when he interviewed the women (whilst I was in the room, I was too busy browsing the Rinkydink Curdlesnoot tag on Tumblr (and I don't mean the actual Benedict Cumberbatch tag, Rinkydink Curdlesnoot is a legit Tumblr tag), but I saw the part where Tubbers interviewed the two young girls. It was so fake and rehearsed and Evan Wood was the most fucking annoying child I've ever seen on the LLS if not ever. The Irish girl (Ashleigh I think?) was caked in fake tan.

Anyway, the girls went off and Tubbers went back to interviewing the women. They were bloody idiots. When he brought up criticism that it could be seen as sexualising children the American mother compared pageants to the Olympics, "do you look at the Olympics and see sex?", the organiser of the pageant then said "people who compete at the Olympics start off young too! And Tyger Woods started playing golf when he was only two!" (Yeah, and look how well Tyger Woods turned out...)

BTW, France has recently banned competitions where anyone under 16 is judged solely on their looks and people who organise pageants after the ban and those who enter children in them face jail time if they do so.

Beauty pageants give me the creeps no matter what the ages of the contestants are. I'd say let little kids do them if they want but it seems like the kids are too young to know if they want to do it or not. It always seems like the mothers are pushing them to do it and it's impossible to tell if a kid really wants to do it or they make themselves want to because it's what mom wants. They should do away with the pageants entirely everywhere, or at least the ones for kids.

I think the French law is a bit insane. Then again they're the nation attempting to ban Muslim religious dress in public so I guess telling girls what to do under pain of criminal action is their idea of feminism over there.

Also you made me miss Galway again. That's unrelated but your discussions of beauty pageants are probably way better than ours.

In Sweden there have been cases where teenagers (both girls and boys) have been dressing in niqab to provoke in public places. It's the new punk fashion!
