Is playing Sims gaming?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-21 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Does Sims count as gaming? I love The Sims but am hesitant to think it counts as gaming; a friend of mine, who is a hardcore gamer, didn't think it counts, but of course that's just one opinion.

That's silly. It might be more casual, but it's still a game and that counts! ♥

Well, the Sims are technically games. I think whether or not it "counts" as gaming, however, is up to the individual person. Personally, I think there are all kinds of games; just because it doesn't follow a traditional format doesn't make playing it any less of a gaming experience.

yes, wtf.

It's a game! A simulation game. Simulation is a genre of games. It's made by a company called EA Games, game is right there in their name (eheh, poetry)

If it is a game then it is gaming.

It's a game, therefore it counts. If your hardcore gamer friend can't accept the fact there are casual games, they need to get over themselves.

/a hardcore gamer who sometimes plays sims

Trying to say that open ended simulation games that emphasize things other than speed and explosions don't count as gaming is just another way of justifying the "video games are full of tits and guns because gamers are mostly straight men and other people aren't interested" bullshit. IMHO.

Well, maybe, but the friend who said it was very much a woman so I think in her case, it might have been more gamer exclusiveness or something.

I like strategy games and nerd exclusiveness myself, so I bet you're right. I just see an unfortunate connection between the two trends.

Man, Sims is hardcore. The hardest of core, let me tell you. You are a GOD. A GOD. You and rule and ruin pixels little pixelated lives as you see fit. How is that not hardcore?

I've smote Sims for the drama and for the laughs. I've killed Sims for the crime of abusing their spouse and for the crime of being boring.

I've spent hours micromanaging towns and populations; matchmaking and mixing genetics and helping my creations achieve their goals. How is that shit not hardcore?

And, it's not like these fuckers are super smart. They kinda know when to piss and eat, but they still need some prodding. So, you rule their lives down to the smallest details of taking care of themselves. What kinda God does that? A fucking hardcore one. You got your little hover hand all up in their lives, clicking and pie menuing and controlling and it's hard... core.
