Notes:

Posting for Liz because Liz got kidnapped. Don't panic: we are currently in the process of collecting the blood of virgins to offer to the aliens as ransom. Everything should be fine. Happens all the time.

2, I also agree with you. Series should be allowed to die with dignity, and Serenity... had serious problems. Joss Whedon working out his issues with gratuitous character death and super-gratuitous teenage-girl kung-fu, much?

how was the character death gratuitous and you didn't seen tons of the teenage-girl kung-fu, besides, how more kick ass can you get than the psycho-weapon realizing her full potential for a final fight?

I'd really rather not get into this, but here's my opinion:

One of the things I liked most about Firefly was the fact that, in contrast to other Joss series, the characters were experienced and nuanced adults. The climax of Serenity bothered me because, in addition to killing off one of these adult characters for no good reason or plot payoff, it made the only truly useful character the brain-damaged minimally-characterized teenage girl. The movie bothered me for other reasons, but that was the icing on the proverbial cake.

Your opinion presumably differs, and I respect that.

I totally respect your differing opinion, I am just having trouble understanding something you said. "It made the only truly useful character the brain-damaged minimally-characterized teenage girl". I think that all the characters were useful, just in varying ways and that it was set up so that near the end what the Alliance government had done to her brain kicked in but in accord with her protecting her brother so she was able to fight off the Reavers. Granted the aforementioned adult's death was unnecessary, it's all set up from the beginning for River to do what she did in the end. And I think she actually had a lot to her character, it's just that a lot of it is traumatized psychosis, I'm not sure if I worded that correctly or not.

I'm not any of the OPs, but I'm posting anonymously because I'd rather keep my bitterness towards River a secret.

Wash was my favorite character, and what really destroyed me was not that Zoe and Wash were separated (which was horrible on its own), but that River piloted the ship in the end. It was like, "See? We don't need Wash at all; River can handle it." I know that's not what was meant to be taken from the scene, but still I hated her for making him look so useless.
