That is, it's not a good comparison to go "but straight men like het!" If you look at the kinds of het they are reading, it's similar to visual porn.

Now if you could prove to me that all straight men love all kinds of het, that would make a better argument. But afaik that isn't true, and in 7+ years of being in fandom I've never met a straight man that loved het porn full of romance and "feels" or that focused the male character's dick.

...Which is why those epically long non-smut het fanfics written by dudes and commented on by a lot of dudes don't exist in fandom.

Except oh wait -- they do!

I mainly read oneshots nowadays but:

You don't have to look very hard.

What fandom are you in that there are so many guys involved?

Shonen/seinen anime fandoms.

nayrt

Hold on a minute, so you're comparing the comparatively maturer audiences of seinen anime to like, 14 year old girls on ff.net that think het is icky? Then judging all women by it?

Nope! Those are just the fandoms I'm mainly involved in. I'm also in female-centric live action fandoms, and this attitude is also prevalent!

Anime fandoms tend to draw younger audiences and younger folks tend to run in extremes (not all, but it's pretty common for kids). When you're in anime fandoms, it's really common to see fans decrying all yaoi/het/yuri as "disgusting" or whatever. I think they tend to become more moderate over time.

I'm not only in anime fandoms. I was just saying anime fandoms are the ones where there are a lot of straight guys.

Okay.

It also puts me off when people refuse to read het/slash/femslash because it "grosses them out" because I find human bodies of both sexes compelling, but I also think that your experience with slash fangirls differs from mine so greatly that it can't be compared.

I'm in a live action fandom predominated by a slash ship where the fans of said ship frequently read and write het and femslash about other characters. So from my experience, I haven't seen slash fans who were grossed out by the vagina.

"non-smut het fanfics"

Except AYRT said "het porn," not "nonsexual shipping" so I don't get what that has to do with anything.

Also links?

I posted some links to fics above.

I've read plenty of good het porn fics, but I don't keep as heavy tabs on them as I do longer fics, so I'm not always entirely sure what the gender of the author is.

Go to Literotica. Click on "romance." You'd be surprised how many guys write and read in that section. (Hell, even in the section I write for, sci-fi and fantasy, you can get a lot of love for writing about love.)

i roleplay with a bunch of straight dudes who won't play out smut but who love playing het ships, so...

hell, i've even played a slash ship with a straight guy before. he didn't want to write the smut but he was all about writing the shippy stuff.

in 7+ years of being in fandom I've never met a straight man that loved het porn full of romance and "feels" or that focused the male character's dick.

that's a super weird and broad generalization, and i don't see how you could say it with certainty in the anonymous world of the internet. i'm also not sure that i agree with the rationale behind it - is this seriously just some "men don't like romance, but ladies are crazy for it!!!" thing? is that seriously the argument you're trying to make?
