Oh good, it's not just me. I have a coworker who really likes the series, and even though she is (also) a nerd, she didn't have any idea about CC's past as an unapologetic plagiarist. Although I have plenty of problems with the way a lot of YA books are written these days, thanks to Twilight and its imitators, they're not the same problems I have with CC. If we got rid of everything for being badly written, a lot of NYTimes bestsellers would go poof, but I'm not big on rewarding thieves with publishing deals.
