Just out of curiosity
(Anonymous) 2013-09-22 01:13 am (UTC)(link)Have you ever considered that OC writers might want to talk about things regarding the world . Or have a space where they can ask about some aspect of the world? I've been a passive observer in an OC community, and I saw a lot of them encourage each other and challenge each other to create more unique characters or characters regarding X aspect of the canon.
Hell there was one RP club that was all original characters set in a haunted school. None of them had contact with the canon characters and were even set in a place far away and focused on the 'ghost stories" aspect of the canon rather than things like romancing the protagonist. Each character ghost or human had individual personalities and hobbies from things like occult to gambling to riding horses IIRC. The ghost characters had back-stories. It was all really cool and creative.
"rightly so."
Sorry but this seems rude and very insulting. "since I don't think people are interested in what you write they should stay away from you". That may not have been how it was intended but it was how it came out.
"tends to be exclusive to the creators"
That's only true if the creator is unsubtle impatient and clumsy in how they introduce the OC or "foreign element". But depending on how you use it you can use the OCs to give the canon characters a new challenge. To show a part of the world we haven't seen yet. You can use the OCs and their actions to lift up and and illuminate the canon character's arc, like white pearls with a black dress. Like OCs with anything really, it's all in how you use it- which is true in writing itself.
Some who have a different perspective might say that smut of one's ship would be considered a personal fantasy of the creator and embarrassing to share. But that would be narrow minded and ignorant to say as well.
