Giant faces in the sky

[personal profile] dreemyweird 2013-09-22 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
This seems to be a popular idea when it comes to designing book/fanfiction covers, and it absolutely cracks me up. I cannot take a book seriously if its cover features one or more faces hanging against a fucking landscape. Bonus points if the faces in question are transparent and have thoughtful/sad expressions.

Well, no, that was a bit of a generalization. I get it that sometimes the copyright for a particular literary work belongs to somebody with no taste/the authors don't even see the design of the covers their books end up having/the works are in public domain and everyone makes rubbish covers for them.

But I must admit that it feels weird when I'm reading a perfectly well-written, serious book, and every time I look at the cover it's like I'm seeing a super short parody sketch making fun of what I've just read. It's a bit like reading books aloud in funny voices. Or making stupid remarks in the course of reading. Like, you know, when you're reading a super dramatic scene, and somebody makes a hilarious remark that ruins the effect completely.

I hate the "let's cluster everyone's heads together" aesthetic for movie posters.

You just made me laugh so hard, because I looked up the popular covers for the DVD/tape releases of my favourite series/films and 99% of them are like this.
Bell and Doyle merging together
Bell looking at the audience from under a giant woman's head (and his expression is all thoughtful and like "it's ok folks don't panic")

wHY ??? n???o?

That is, I absolutely agree with the sentiment.

But where are we supposed to put faces if not in the sky?! On their neck and shoulders? Is that what you're suggesting? Don't be ridiculous!

I follow a tumblr blog called wtfbadromancecovers and the giant faces in the sky don't seem to be limited to people, but a lot of animals too. It's hilarious sometimes. You know, you'll have a werewolf romance novel with the couple embracing passionately in the front and above them, a transparent wolf face staring solemnly into the clouds.
