Fanfic about guy/girl falling in love with straight best friend without it being requited in the end

(Anonymous) 2013-09-22 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Any recs? It seems that all "X and Y are BFFS and X angsts about Y being straight" slash fanfics turn out with Y eventually reciprocating or are little snapshot vignettes that allow for the possibility that Y could reciprocate. But I've noticed there's a general dearth of fics where X realizes Y is totally straight or in love with someone of the opposite gender and will never return their feelings, or where Y has to reject X. Recs?

Bonus if Y's platonic love for X is still really strong.

There's a pretty cool one called Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.

Oh wait, that isn't technically fanfic....<_<

I'm not sure I can guess who in AGoS you think is X and who is Y.

I did a spittake :D

(Although I'd have to say that if it was a fic, it would only count in the "Watson is in love with another person and therefore unwilling in practice" category, not the "straight" or "unrequited" category.)

Possibly?

Unrequited romance isn't the only thing going on.

I read a really good one once where A was in love with B, but B was dating someone else. B wasn't straight, though, so it probably doesn't match your qualifications.

On the subject, I'm actually surprised there are so many "A->B but not B->A" stories where conflicting sexualities don't come up.

Well, I don't know your fandoms, but I love this.

I'd try just searching "unrequited" on AO3/ff.net for more.

Eh, so many people use "unrequited" to mean "pining" though.

There are some heartbreaking Sentinel fics like this - one or two that span decades even. I'm time poor this morning, but you should be able to find them in sentinel fic finders on lj (just google that and it'll come up) through the tags.

Timely! I just read this yesterday: http://archiveofourown.org/works/970359.

A couple dozen languages still can't supply Daniel with the right words to explain himself to Jack

I'm not sure how far it goes into Daniel, of Stargate SG-1, being in love with Jack, but there's definitely something there that I think fits your parameters.

I read a really good James/Sirius fic where Sirius was in love with James but James was legitimately straight and in love with Lily. But of course their friendship was still rock solid, and it was all from Sirius' perspective. I wish I could find it again, it was great.
