Right there with you on that one. Unless you are hearing colors and seeing sounds, then it isn't a true migraine.

While we are at it, can we stop calling a cold "the flu". If you have a cold you might need a day or two off work just to be courteous to your coworkers about not being a typhoid mary. If you have the flu, then you need a week or two off to heal your lungs and relearn how to walk.

Except no, the hallucinatory elements are not universal and the misconception that they are prevents a number of people with other classic migraine signs from actually getting help.

Uh, no. I actually didn't know I had migraines for years (which have been at this point officially diagnosed and treated by doctors) because I get all the symptoms except the visual and audio distortions. Pounding headache, light sensitivity, severe nausea, emotional sensitivity out the wazoo, etc... and funny, migraine abortives (not excedrin, prescription strength stuff) works for them.

This "it can only be a migraine if you have visual/audio distortions" bullshit kept me from getting treated for years, because that was the only thing people ever talked about with a migraine. /rant

Holy shit, this! I'm like you in the fact that I get all those nasty symptoms except the visual/audio distortions. Last time I checked, a mere headache didn't make people vomit and be sensitive to light because of how much throbbing pain they were having from their head!

This is way too late, but your second thing isn't entirely true. Flus and immune systems are not created equal, and I tend to experience colds and flus fairly similarly.

The main differences are that colds tend to come on slowly for me with an itch developing in my throat and mostly involve my nose being stuffed-up as fuck, whereas flus come on rapidly (one day I'm fine, next day I'm sick), cause me to be feverish for at least a day, involve a clear/mostly clear nose, more coughing, and then can leave me wheezing a bit for months afterward. I never, ever get fevers from colds.

But, um, neither have caused me to stay home from work (only getting hand, foot and mouth disease did that).
