Learn any life lessons this week?

[personal profile] souljelly 2013-09-22 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
This isn't an entirely new revelation, but after a super old (incredibly, embarrassingly douchebaggy, 'I really don't agree with this any more why did I even write it whyyy') tumblr post I made was brought back from the depths of my archives this week, I was reminded that the internet is indeed forever. Just gotta sit down with a cup of tea and wait for all this to just blow over but eh, it's anxiety I could have done without.

In the meantime, what did you learn/re-learn this week, F!S?
starphotographs: This is from Futurama. It might not be easily recognized as such. (Boring Geology Lecture)

I learned that hunting for fulgurites is really, really hard! It's basically like meteor hunting, but with no impact crater, and you can't use a metal detector.

A guy at a rock expo told me this, and it gave me a new appreciation for the ones he sold to me!

Always having a bicycle tyre repair kit and pump in your backpack is still not enough if you can't find the goddamn puncture. Carrying even a small basin with you is over-the-top crazy-prepared and impractical so consider adding a spare inner tube to your kit instead.

It sucks to have that thrown in your face. Good luck with all of that.

I learned once again that I am not funny to anyone but me and my RL friends. I keep learning that lesson too. Like, okay world, I get it. Please stop teaching this lesson. But I figure it keeps teaching it to me because I keep making bad jokes.

I misread that as 'it's sucks to have bats thrown in your face.'

I dunno. I'm very territorial about my food.

Even if you are a cute bat.

I have discovered that my evening walking route buts up against an underpass that's home to a huge bat colony. I am pretty sure that one of these days I really am going to get a bat to the face.

I hate that, and I do wish people would let old stuff go. Things I've said have resurfaced or been brought up, and... I can't help what I did back then, but I'm older and wiser now, give me a break.

That people, no matter how good friends you think you might be, will lie to save face even when it might affect you, and that it's hard to believe anyone right now.

Not this week, but fairly recently, I've come to the realization that a lot of the time when people say rude/hurtful/none of their business things to complete strangers, they're projecting their own issues onto you. It's not about you, it's about them, and it's not your problem, it's theirs. Don't take it personally. I know this is probably common sense, and also much easier said than done, but lately I've really started to believe it. My mom's always told me this but recently there have been several examples where someone unnecessarily criticized me for something (sexuality, having kids, career path, etc.), only to have it turn out later that they were struggling with that same thing and had massive levels of projection and denial going on.

I've tried to keep this in mind when dealing with people and it's actually helped a lot in keeping from getting upset if I realize that if someone says 'your sexuality is wrong and you need to be fixed' there's a good chance they're dealing with some sexuality issues of their own (of course there's also a chance that they're just an asshole, but either way it's not my fault).

Never sign up to a dating site where you actually have to pay a membership fee, even if it's only a $5 trial, because once those fuckers get your credit card details they will not stop in sucking out the money until you eventually cancel your credit card $500 later.

Also, do more internet research.

Also, give up on dating.

If you scream at your therapist she will not like it.

(She kept telling me to express my anger and finally I did.)

You have my sympathy; as a teenager I was very vocal about some opinions I had that are the polar opposite of what I believe as an adult, and it's stopped me from reconnecting with people I knew back then because I'm worried about getting it thrown back in my face the first time we have an argument.

I learned that sometimes it's okay to spend money, particularly when that money is the form of a gift card with fees that make it lose value over time. Last time I got one of those things I sat on it because I kept thinking I'd really need the money for something down the line, and if I go and spend it now what will I do then, etc. By the time I got over myself the fucking fees had taken almost half the value of the card. Not making that mistake again! This week I got a gift card in the mail from a survey site and went right to the store the same day it arrived.
