Try people shipping characters before the first episode even airs based on character descriptions and publicity photographs (Stargate Universe)

Or people fangirling over a video game character without knowing anything about him or knowing what his voice sounded like in response to people bashing him without knowing anything about him or knowing what his voice sounded like (James Vega in Mass Effect)

I have thought a character seemed badass from playing a video game demo (Bakara in Mass Effect 3), but I held off forming an actual opinion on her until I played the whole game.

I think people were shipping Chloe and Matt before the show aired, after the show started airing people were shipping Chloe and Eli and once she got together with Matt some of the same people branded her a whore (because being friendly with a guy means that you're 100% into him, I suspect the ones calling her a whore were neckbeards who identified with Eli "he's an overweight, nerdy guy who likes a hot girl, he's 100% like me!" and took umbrage at Chloe's "friendzoning" of Eli)

I think the Matt/Eli shippers waited until the show aired and they saw the characters actual personalities

Oh, I see. I think I heard some of that. Mostly at Joe Malozzi's blog.

I got off on the wrong foot with Chloe and didn't like her for season 1a (and for five minutes during the pilot, I thought that Matt/Eli might be viable before they just kind of never hung out or cared about eachother) - complete end of story is that I liked Chloe best at the end and started liking Chloe/Rush...because no one will write the Chloe/Weir crossovers I'd have them write...
