So...in general, I don't get the hate boner F!S and Tumblr has to pet names/nick names.

For me, I can USUALLY tell who is being a condescending ass to me when call me "honey," "sweetie," "babe," what the fuck have you. And I shut those people down or refuse to talk to them.

and I GET that if someone calls you a pet name when you've asked them NOT to, that that person is an ass who needs to be shut down in someway.

But what I DON'T fucking get is this attitude that any pet name is some demeaning, misogynistic, condescending bullshit name.

I call fucking bullshit on that. Because, unless you've set those boundaries, most people calling someone "babe," "hon/honey," "sweetie," "love," "sugar," "baby," etc are usually NOT being a condescending ass. They usually denote affection. I call my boyfriend "babe" and "baby" all the fucking time. I even call him "love." He does the same thing. It doesn't bother me. But SOMEONE out there would most likely tell me he's being a misogynistic ass for DARING to call me those. And i don't agree that extreme view.

So, what's the fucking deal? Is it because the SJWs have gotten to so damn many people that it's brainwashed them from the affectionate pet/nick names? What?

You're conflating real life usage and internet usage, comrade, and in this case the two could not be more dissimilar.

I too have been called "babe" etc. by significant others. However, 99% of the time - no, make that 100% of the time - someone has used a pet diminutive to refer to me on the internet it's been in condescension. Every single time I've seen it used on F!S or other message boards to people who were not me, in a discussion, it has been in condescension. These are people who do not know you. They have no reason to refer to you with affection. They are doing it to insult you. Which would be why people take umbrage; it's entirely justified.

Problem is, they end up equating it WITH IRL situations along with internet usage. And I can't understand that.

also, what ever happened to people calling each other "bb"? Or is that now considered to condescending?

I still see "bb" tossed around once in a while, but like most slang, it had a short shelf-life. As for whether or not it was condescending, well, in my experience I've seen it used both ways.

I use bb all the time tbh. I THINK I've even used it here on f!s before (not with the intention of being condescending!) but after the talk we've had of people hating nicknames and the like I've tried to stop.

offline pet names are fine, online pet names set my teeth to grinding in annoyance because 99.9% of the time it's condescending bullshit. (The exception being 'bb')
