He had/has college age fans too.

I like him, for a certain definition of like. I think he's one of the few actually interesting and intimidating villains the show managed to have, so I like that. Yami Marik, though, goes straight back to the boring YGO villain mode. What makes for a good villain is even more subjective than most opinions in a show like this, though, so I'd hardly expect others to agree.

I'm fine with Malik, don't care much about him, but I absolutely loathe Yami Malik. He's so boring and one-dimensional. But well, most of it is over-exposure. In 2005, I was really into tendershipping, and so many stories had all yamixhikari pairings.

I find Marik boring, but Yalik is just a nasty nasty piece of shit.

At least Dark Bakura had a sense of humor, and standards, kinda. "There are ways I want to win and ways I don't want to win."

I like Malik decently enough-- not my favorite, but I still like him-- but I remember being utterly baffled the first time I ran into Yami Malik/Self-Insert fic when I was 11/12ish. Like, what is there to like about Yami Malik?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-24 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
As only a casual Yugioh fan, I didn't pick up on hikari being the opposite of yami right away and thought you were talking about shipping Yami Malik with Hikari Yagami from Digimon Adventure...

I guess late-mid 90s anime is old now.

Well, it's what, 15 years?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-23 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
He is pretty much the worst. Although I do like him in The Abridged Series.

This secrets bring me back to the good old days, were Malik/Bakura fic was everywhere. I miss that.

I wasn't even in the fandom but even I read that shit.

I should read that shit. I was never into shipping back then. I bet the fics from back then will be horrendous.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-24 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Most are, but as with a lot of other big fandoms you have to wade through tons of crap to find the few good ones.

I can only image how horrible they are. I used to write fic for Yugioh back in the day, and I know what I wrote is very cringeworthy now.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-24 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
In my case is a tie between Yami Malik and Yami Bakura.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-24 09:14 am (UTC)(link)
But isn't it canon that he's really a good guy deep down? IIRC, they defeated his evil side and then he became good, didn't he? After all, this is a kids' show...

And, you know, 'sexy' is a personal taste thing.

Damn, I haven't thought about this show in years. The actual show, not the abridged one.

How dare anyone like a character with moral ambiguity ever. We must only like "good" characters, never ever villains.

When I watched this show as a kid, I loved the Battle City plotline, but Malik/Marik/whatever always made me uncomfortable. His hair was a weird tint of blonde.

I legitimately think that was the entire reason.
