Mid-life crisis at 24. :( Graduated college, taught English abroad for two years, now am back where I started, not knowing what to do with my life. I feel like I need to start my CAREER since I have so many friends that are finding work in the fields they want to be in, but my interest is writing, history and global studies and the best I've got is an unpaid internship at a small local newspaper (and I'm not really interested in journalism). I just can't decide what I want to be when I grow up. I know I need to narrow down my interests, but for some reason find it so hard to sit there and make these decisions. I know some people don't decide what they want to do until much later in life, but I still feel like I'm a fish out of water and not sure which way the water actually is.

I definitely feel you. No idea what I want to do or should do.

You already are grown up.

I feel like one major lie here is that careers need to be about interests. It's a natural starting point because most people start out with few other indications about what to look for in a career, and it takes a bit of work experience to narrow down what processes are right for you. You've done teaching, you've tried journalism - so did you enjoy the day-to-day tasks involved in either of those things or were they unpleasant for you? I think most of us have some flexibility in terms of what kind of tasks we can learn to be good at, but not total flexibility. It's tragically hard to feel out unless you've done a few different things and something, somewhere's gone 'click'. IA about people often not deciding by the time they're 24 - I'm 28 and I think most of my friends my age haven't had that 'click' moment yet.

I was in a very similar situation to yours. I'm 26 with an associate's degree in veterinary technology. I worked at a vet. hospital for 2 years and realized I didn't like the environment and I wasn't making a living wage nor was there much chance for a raise. I also wasn't given more opportunities to gain experience because the more experienced technicians were always picked before me. I decided to pick one aspect of the job I was really good at and went back to college to further my education and (hopefully) my career options.

I don't know if you're in a position to take classes and I don't know what kind of degree(s) you have, but it might be worth looking into. At least it'll make you feel like you're on the path to finding your dream career.

Good luck! I'm sure you'll figure it out!
