Narrative songs

Some of my very favorite songs are ones that tell a story. It's part of the reason I like Al Stewart so much- I even take my username from one of his songs. What are your favorite narrative songs??

Some of mine:
Al Stewart- Roads to Moscow, Night Train to Munich, or in a less historical vein Night of the 4th of May or Electric Los Angeles Sunset.

Other people- Girl Laying Down, Percy's Song, The Very Last Night, All for You, Sophia (Okay yeah I have a thing for historical stuff, I know), Cherry Lips, I Saw You in the Wild, The Cold Swedish Winter, and maybe Orange Fell (I am actually at this concert!)

That's what I came here to say, but I was going to link to the version from Heartworn Highways (or the Emmylou cover).

Also, Nick Cave's Murder Ballads.

Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue - Where the Wild Roses Grow

And actually, the whole Nick Cave album Murder Ballads, it's pretty much all narrative songs and they're all about murders and it's fantastic.

And Ludo's Lake Pontchartrain, too. ...I am very fond of songs about murder.

Awkwardly, Where the Wild Roses Grow ended up being [personal profile] mechanosapience's and my "song" -- mostly because when I introduced him to Murder Ballads, one of us mentioned how fucked-up it would be if that ended up being "our song," after which point it was pretty much inevitable.

Emilie Autumn - Shallot
Dessa - Mineshaft II
Metric - Rock Me Now (More like a series of scenes than a conventional narrative, but, that's part of why I like it).

My favourite ever is Mortal City by Dar Williams, but it doesn't appear to be on the youtubes rn.

Richard Thompson: 1952 Vincent Black Lightning -- Someone actually wrote fanfic for me about it a couple of years ago at Yuletide.

I actually have a real weakness for story songs but I don't seek them out often enough, so thanks for this thread.

Ooooh, Al Stewart! I love everything on 'Year of the Cat', and also 'Immelman Turn' - i love his flying songs.

Richard Shindell has a bunch of really great ones. "There Goes Mavis" is a great little story about a day at the beach, "Fishing" is an utterly haunting story about a guy who's being interrogated and facing deportation, "Transit" is one of my favorite songs ever due to basically sounding like a bizarre urban legend, "The Last Fare of the Day" is a really surprisingly uplifting song about 9-11... oh, and then there's "Che Guevara T-Shirt", just... perfect, really.

Dude is basically to me the equivalent of Justin Bieber to tweenies. Turns me into a squealy fangirl with his storytelling and perfect word choices.

I like a lot of Loreena McKennitt's songs because they are narratives, like "Annachie Gordon" or "The Lady of Shalott".

Kate Rusby as well, with "Sir Eglamore" and "The Cobbler's Daughter."

I admittedly have little experience with songs specifically written for this, but I remember being captivated when my prof played some Irish ballads as performed by Karan Casey - enough that I went up after class and asked to borrow the CD to rip it haha. I'll have to listen to some of these.

Two from that album (Songlines):
