GET OFF MY NEOLAWN

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-09-24 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Just ribbing. I imagine this might grow from a faith that doesn't have a canon (there might be with British Traditional, I'm talking about paganism in general). You're going to have dabblers. Hell, there's christian dabblers (I'm a follower of Christ! That means I care a great deal about Old Testament law and demand everyone be perfect, completely negating the value of that whole Crucifixion thing in the first place! Also my religion centers around a horrible execution and I support the death penalty!) and there's a damn Bible to point to.

It's like those Astaru guys who are frustrated with the racist norse worshipers. Obviously the racists are awful but where do you point (religiously) to tell them they're wrong?

Ahh, Gardnerian tears. They are so special and traditional, why does no one understand how special and traditional they are?

Ooh, another tumblr quip! Because eclectic Wicca didn't start until tumblr.

Oh, wait. Well, logic isn't really the point here, is it? It's dammit, words must mean what I want them to mean, and I don't care if they do or not!

so ~traditional~, Stella.

I suggest turning off the internet and turning up your comforting Enya CD.

"Obviously the racists are awful but where do you point (religiously) to tell them they're wrong?"

- About half the Norse gods are nonwhite, according to Snorri Sturluson (compiler of the Prose Edda).
- The source material actively supports miscegenation (start with Loki, spend a good bit of time there, then move onto actual humans).
- Contact between the Norse and "foreigners" (for example, the Rus) is peaceful and, although over-sexualized and idealized, reasonably truthful. IF the Norse were racists they'd spew the same hateful drivel people tend to say about their enemies (call them baby-eating heathens and so on) and preach supremacy. The closest you get to supremacist language are statements like "the X family were the most renowned of warriors" and so on.

--Snorri Sturluson died in 1241. His definition of whiteness is going to be different from a modern interpretation.
--You can support Loki fucking horses and still hate black people.
--A modern white supremacist is going to consider Russians--and most cultures the Vikings came in contact with--white. They're white supremacists, not Scandinavian supremacists.
