Allergies

[personal profile] tei 2013-09-24 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I usually have mild allergies during the summer and take medicine for them and it's pretty much fine, not a big deal. For some reason now I'm having awful allergies-- like, to the point where I can barely function because of sneezing fits-- and I have no idea why. It's September and there's definitely no pollen left around where I live, I don't have pets, I'm not living anywhere new and it doesn't seem to matter where I am. I can't figure it out and the drug I usually use in the summer isn't working very well any more :( has anyone else ever had random allergy attack from the pit of hell?

Where are you? Because I am going through the same thing here in NC. I've been having to pop allergy meds because mine have been so bad they have triggered my asthma.

Are you sure it's just your allergies and you're not coming down with a cold? I know it's been gong around in our area for the past few weeks; I'm just getting over a nasty one that had me sneezing like crazy at first.

Maybe? It feels like allergies, and I thought the allergy medication wasn't working so I stopped it for a few days and it go way worse. Maybe it's somehow both though. I just took some of that neocitrin stuff that's for colds and it seemed to work. It makes you pretty loopy though so I couldnt really use it during the day...

I get really nasty allergies during the fall/winter. I have no idea why personally.

It could be a respiratory infection instead; that would explain the lack of location-sensitivity and the way your medication isn't doing much of anything. From what I've been hearing from a few doctor friends, cold and flu seems to be getting off to an early start this year.

Maybe you've developed a new one? It does happen sometimes, sadly.

"It's September and there's definitely no pollen left around where I live..."

Huh? Unless you live someplace completely free of plants, there's a pretty good chance that yes, there's still pollen floating in the air even in September. Peak allergy times tend to be spring AND fall. Spring for flowers, fall for trees/grasses/weeds. Pollen count for Montreal:

Don't know what you're taking for it, but I prefer diphenhydramine (often called Benadryl) is most effective, but makes me really sleepy and foggy-headed. Chlorpheniramine Maleate (often called Chlor-Trimeton) for situations where you need to NOT be all drowsy and zoned out. I've heard people swear by saline nasal sprays or neti pots to flush out the sinuses, but haven't tried it myself.

I don't know where you live, but if you've had to turn the heater on yet, it could be a dust allergy.
