Who would do that? Just read fics from a fandom they are not in because it has kinks they like? Or because they ran out of good fics in their own fandoms?

Who would do such insane things like watch a show or read the wikipedia summary of it just so they understand enough of it to read the fanfics. Ah ha ha ha. That is crazy talk. (;一_一)

If you want to read Sterek fic, you're probably better off not researching the canon and getting erroneous expectations.

I wasn't talking about Sterek. :P I actually watched the first season, some of the second, and some of the third.

I think OP may have been.

My partner is obsessed with Glee fanfic, even though she never watched the show. It was kind of funny the first time she watched an episode with me and was like, "now I can't read Faberry any more. They have no chemistry." Should have stuck to just reading the wiki, haha.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-25 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
God, I love Faberry in theory. It hits on some of my favorite ever tropes but having watched the series, I can't really read fic for it or I'm jarred by remembering how the show is totally not like the fic and they really spend most of their time arguing over a guy. :/

ABSOLUTELY NO ONE WOULD DO THAT, OP IS A RARE AND MAGICAL BEAST, THAT'S ALMOST AS CRAZY READING THE FANFIC OF A SHOW YOU HAVEN'T SEEN BECAUSE YOU FIND TWO OF THE CHARACTERS HOT, CRAZY CRAZY CRAZY

While we're on the topic, maybe there should be a kink_manifesto listing what fandoms have a lot of what kinks. Hmmm, possibilities...

I have fandoms where I enjoy a pairing but do not necessarily know all of the canon.

I started gorging myself on FMA fic when I had only watched a random episode. I didn't know who most of the characters were and it made little difference. I later watched all of Brotherhood and that helped me enjoy the fic more, but yeah. I can see where you're coming from. The characterization in PWPs is not always 100% for any fandom anyway.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-24 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

I would rather read smut in a fandom I don't know, so that I'm not distracted by whether the characters are IC or not.

I have trouble enjoying fanfic smut if I don't know or care about the character. It's why I have trouble reading completely AU stories because those fics tend to be original fiction with canon names tacked on.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-25 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, no question that smut is sooo much better if you know the fandom and the author happens to have written the tasty bits in-character ...

But sometimes I just want to sit back and gobble up well-written erotica a la Anais Nin.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-25 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Same for me, except I love AUs because of the ones that are so well thought out and IC despite all the difference in story line.

I inhaled Gundam Wing fanfic because some girl showed me a picture of the pilots and their mecha while we were sitting in the waiting room at the dentist's office. I did later on go watch all the episodes, but not in the beginning.

I've heard that a certain point a fair amount of the Gundam Wing smut fanfic was being written by people who hadn't seen the canon. Though I wasn't in the fandom so that may be an exaggeration.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-25 09:40 am (UTC)(link)
No, that's pretty much right. Gundam Wing and Gundam Wing fic generally had nothing to do with each other.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-24 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I read a ton of video game fics despite only having a gameboy color. >

(Anonymous) 2013-09-24 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's really that uncommon. I read some SPN fic, but can't stand the show. I've also read Highlander fic and have never seen any of the movies.

It doesn't happen often, but occasionally I'll read fanfic for a pairing before I see the source material. Usually after I experience it I'll go back and read my favorites, see if they still hold up. Sometimes they do, and sometimes the characters are barely recognizable. It's kind of fun reading them again with new insight even if I don't always feel the same about the story.

But yea, if you're enjoying reading the fic, then continue to read the fic. There is nothing wrong with this situation.

xeno/beast fic

(Anonymous) 2013-09-24 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
or lack thereof. Very disappointed in TW for this. So many missed opportunities! Sure there's knotting wherever you look but psh, that's so tame. I want full on werewolfy freakydeaky sexytiems.

There's a bestiality tag on AO3

(Anonymous) 2013-09-25 01:04 am (UTC)(link)

and a xeno one
http://archiveofourown.org/tags/Xeno

if you really don't care about fandom/characters and are just looking for the kinks.

I usually feel vaguely guilty if I read fic for a fandom I'm not in. A long time ago I was reading this excellent Shaman King fic and it didn't seem to matter that I had no idea what the canon was, but I kept wondering if they were really IC even though why should I care?

On the other hand I will read RPF about anyone I've ever heard of, even if I have no idea what they're like in real life. I don't read that much of it, but I don't let "canon" knowledge stop me.

That reminds me of this yaoi manga

(Anonymous) 2013-09-25 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
^ that I once read. It had knotting in it and I swear, it was the weirdest thing. I was reading normally about a normal universe and all of a sudden, there's a diagram with explanation of knotting. So weird.
