Nothing. People THOUGHT he was being transphobic because they don't understand satire. NEVER CHANGE TUMBLR! http://lchiharas.tumblr.com/post/53985363556/vancouverfeminist

*sigh*

People labeled Stephen Colbert transphobic because he made a joke? That's what he does!! "Bacon and tomato." I find that hysterical!

Some people need to 1) grow a thicker skin and 2) find a sense of humor.

I wasn't surprised so many people took that too seriously. Satire is often badly done and Colbert is brilliant at it. Satire calls society out on its bullshit, and society is terrible about forgetting the BT in LGBT. So he made that joke. I thought it was fucking brilliant.

Luckily a ton of people on Tumblr pointed that out, so the folks on that site aren't a total loss.

Yeshua bar Miriam on a triscuit... The fact that Colbert the character made that comment should tell people that that Colbert the comedian doesn't agree...

Oh god, tumblr is so fucking embarrassing sometimes.

Wait, THIS is the one people were upset about? It's pretty much in line with trans-ally tumblr's own humor.
There was however another one where he talked about - iirc - cattle being fed hormones, and compared that to transgender people.

There we go: http://feministfilm.tumblr.com/post/20719874270/stephen-colbert-doubles-down-on-transphobic-joke
This, to be honest I found a lot less funny, and definitely not satirical. Like, he's not satirizing people's reactions to transgender people, the joke does not rely on people getting that it's wrong. It's just "transgender people and their freaky artificial hormones, amirite?"

And still, people don't get that "Stephen Colbert" is not the same person as Stephen Colbert. The whole point of the Colbert Report is that his character does tasteless jokes that a rightwing showmaster would do in earnest. When "Stephen Colbert" talks bullshit, he does so on purpose. Because it's bullshit and Stephen Colbert is aware of that. If you honestly take anything the character says on the show at face value, you have not understood a thing. I think he became very, very obvious lately so maybe people don't get it when he does more subtle satire.

I'm not really sure why they thought that joke was offensive?
