So, F!S, what do you do to cheer yourself up?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-24 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm going through a shitty phase in my life. I'm keeping myself busy, but suggestions are welcome. F!S, what are some small and not-too-expensive things you do to make yourself feel better.

I game to both take my frustration out on stuff, and distract myself.

Also, if I feel really bad, I watch either Cats Don't Dance or The Road to El Dorado.

I do little crafty things. At the moment I'm modding My Little Ponies, because I find it easier to get the final product to match what I was thinking of than I do with, say, drawing. The initial outlay for paint and hair hanks and the like can be a little bit costly, depending on how much you want to prepare, but piece-for-piece each pony costs me maybe $10 to make.

MLP!Anon: also, if there's a computer game you'd like but can't justify in your budget, if it's available on Steam and you have an account there I'd buy it for you :) Gaming is a huge de-stresser for me.

Op here.

Hello, that's very kind of you! I wasn't begging for favors, though. I do have some DS games I can still play :)

Oh, I didn't think you were! I just like doing nice things for people when I can, and work has been good this month so I've got enough breathing room. I'm glad you've got DS games :) My housemate loves her DS.

I don't know who you are, but I honestly believe people like you make the word a better place. Thank you for being who you are. That alone just lifted my mood already...

Take up a creative hobby. You'll have something at the end of it to show for your work, which is always satisfying! Some options I have tried and enjoyed: quilling, knitting, baking, wood carving, origami, making gingerbread houses, lace-making, embroidery, and I've recently started teaching myself how to make my own clothes. I've also started using the library regularly and going for long walks. If you have a camera and don't already know how, learning to use it manually is fairly time consuming but awesome. Hope things get better for you, anon.

I like origami because it keeps my hands busy, and I usually end up with a pretty thing. If I feel really anxious, I just stick to the things I know instead of trying new stuff because that not working out frustrates me too much. Hearing water calms me down too, so it's either eight hours long videos of rivers flowing on youtube or this shark cam.
I hope things get better for you soon!

This is probably extremely odd, but lately I watch let's plays of horror games.

Sometimes it scares the shit out of me but I usually get a good laugh at both myself and the person playing, and it turns into a fun distraction.

Read or watch TV or a movie. Just letting myself get caught up in a story and not thinking about my problems for awhile always makes me feel better.

Funny animal videos(usually cats), or a Disney film I really love.

Lots of physical activity. I'm not much of one for gyms and I don't own a bicycle, but I like to take long, long, long walks. I drive to state/county parks outside of my city when I can and go hiking.

Exercise! I've been in the best shape my life when I've been going through the roughest times. Plus, physical activity has been shown to help improve your mood. Walking/jogging cost nothing, besides.
