Appropriation

(Anonymous) 2013-09-25 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
for you, when does something become appropriation? for me I would say when used disrespectfully or for someone's own gain, like the strongest example I can think is wearing Native American headress as a costume but it'd be okay if it'd had been presented to a person and they wore it at...events you would wear it at (idk much about Native Americans sorry, just first example I could think of negatively thanks to tumblr)

but normally I wouldn't consider most things appropriation so much as just...cultural habits merging, provided it's not like halloween costume. and brought to mind cause i'm getting kind of irritated and tumblr's cry of "appropriation" everytime someone wears something that has been decided to not be part of their culture o_O like lucky cats (just thinking examples off my head, just walked past a store selling them hah)

ps not american, "appropriation" where i live is considered natural merging when various cultures live near each other (apparently called the melting pot effect?! had no idea it had a name) and I don't get why tumblr is so intent on separating people, since familiarity helps prevent ignorance and, well, racism D:

Sort of OT, I like stuff like kimonos in Dutch wax prints, or the Yankee style in Japan, or a foxy black man in a kilt.

I usually stick with stuff that is especially religiously and culturally significant AND that material not being respected in a similar as that culture. Like, I'd be okay with American white dude wearing culturally significant item something, if he respected its origin and depending how significant it was got approval/earned it from the people whose culture it came from.

This - though I do think a person's cultural background needs to be taken into account as well. [Using the above example, say said white man's family is originally from the place the item is from [and, conceivably, still holds it as significant as a result]? I don't think they really need to seek approval in that case.]

Also, and this is more a pet peeve, that it's possible to appropriate all cultures no matter the races involved [which is something SJWs seem to completely disagree with.]

I think the hysterics about cultural appropriation are mostly incredibly silly and OTT. I'm actually tempted to troll the tumblr tag by creating a fake appropriation-call-out tumblr, but it's too much work XD
