Getting a new phone y'all!

(Anonymous) 2013-09-25 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I just ordered a Samsung Galaxy S3, and I'm super excited about it, even though it's not a current-gen phone. The phone I have is so old, this will still feel like a massive upgrade. Does anyone have thoughts on cases?

My current phone (Samsung Intercept), I bought its case from a kiosk at the mall. I have no idea what brand it is, it just snaps on and has seved me well, other than some of the paint chipping away at the edges. My iPod, which is also super old (3rd Gen Nano -- the short stubby version from 2007) has lived its life wonderfully in a Griffin hard clear case.

So, I'm thinking maybe the Griffin Reveal. I like the idea of the Otterbox Defender series, just because I worry about being rough on things. I tend to drop them -- the ipod recently took a 3-4 foot tumble to the concrete and fortunately came out unscathed (bonus of being short, I guess). I also like the idea of it having it's own, built-in screen cover, but I really don't want to add a ton of bulk to this phone. It's pretty big for my pretty small hands as it is.

And I do think screen protectors are forever in my future. I know, the jerk-ass answer is "One pocket just for phone!! It's not hard!!" but I don't always think about that, and I like the extra security of knowing I don't necessarily need to. Plus, I was really late adopter to touchscreens and still haven't quite gotten over the feeling like my hands are never clean enough.

So -- specifically for S3 users, but I'll take any advice, too -- what do you have? How do you like it? Thoughts on what I should get?

My sister's boyfriend just broke his Samsung Galaxy S3. He had it in an Otterbox Defender and dropped it from about 5 feet. It is completely unusable (one half of the screen is green and the touch screen don't work). And it would cost $300 to repair. So for the love og all that if holy, don't drop it from 5 ft.

Holy shit. I just paid $300 *to get* this phone.

Contact Otterbox and tell them - they're supposed to replace the case and device if it breaks within.

Oh man. I have an iPhone 5 and regret not getting a screen protector. :( My 3GS survived without one for two years - I dropped it a lot and had few if any screen scratches. I'd tried protectors but they always got annoying so I almost never had one. But my iPhone 5 screen is BAD and I've had it for a year (since launch). I like it otherwise though! And iOS7 is PRETTY.

I can't vouch for how good their Samsung cases are, but I loooove iSkin's iPhone ones. (seriously, I have like... 10 or 15 of these between my two iPhones). They have some rubbery ones or some just plain nice ones.

Wow, the Aura sure is pretty! Thanks for the link.

Also, I really wish some rich person would snap up a bunch of phones and cases and just do drop tests on Youtube or something.

No prob! They're my favourite case brand (obviously) :D there are sturdier ones out there, but I'm shallow and buy for looks. ;)

Some phones have many such videos out there! I can usually find a drop test on YouTube within days of the newest iPhone coming out. I bet if you just YouTube 'phone type' + 'drop test' you can get a bunch. Some compare the latest phones in one video, too if you're lucky.

The videos that really boggle me are the 'will it blend?' Ones. Like they'll actually stick iPhones, iPads, and other such into a blender and see how long it takes to mash it up. That sounds a little more insane than just dropping a phone, to me ;)

I have one of these. Hasn't failed me so far.

Neat. I'll have to check it out in person, because my first thought was that it looked to bulky for me...but then one of the very first reviews was "I thought it would be bulky, but it's not!"

It isn't! The corners are padded and you can tell they are, but the thickness is about the same as an iPhone, and it's much lighter than you'd expect. It covers the side buttons completely, but I've had no problems pressing them properly right through the case.

The S3 is still insanely popular. We legit sell about four or five a week. The back is plastic, so do get a little bit of a stronger case than your plastic snaps.

If you can, consider a case that charges.

Plenty of S3 users here in Korea, where everyone has a smartphone. I have a Vega racer and my case is just the 'notebook' kind, with a leather-like cover that flips closed and has a little magnetic tab. I like it a lot, keeps it clean when it's in my purse or pocket. I've dropped it before and it's been fine, although that wasn't from five feet up onto concrete or whatever.
