To be fair, a chunk of the fandom (from what I've seen) was more peeved at Mako because he never just sat down at talked to either Asami or Korra to figure that whole triangle out till the blow out at the end. It was his wish-washiness that was annoying and it was most annoying that the show didn't treat it like a flaw. The same with Korra, who never really thought of Asami's feelings when she went after Mako, and this wasn't treated as a flaw either.
