I feel so so bad for one of my co-workers right now. As much as I knock on her for being a bit of a whinebag, she's been getting massively dumped on a lot within the last few months.

Her husband cheated on her so she started divorce proceedings and moved in with her best friend (another co-worker) and her family.

Then this poor boy in their neighbourhood snuck back into that co-worker's backyard after her son's pool party ended and drowned.

Then she finally comes back to work - gallbladder attack and ends up having to get it taken out.

Goes on vacation last week to Vegas for her 40th birthday with same friend/co-worker - gets a call saying her soon-to-be-ex has disappeared with his gun (he hunts), he left a note after breaking up with his girlfriend, they found his car, and they still haven't found him.

I just feel so bad for her and I have no idea what to say to her (I'm terrible with the platitudes and trite sympathy 'there there, it'll be okay' type things. D:

The best thing you can say is, "If you need to talk, about anything, I'll listen." And then, if she needs to talk, listen. You don't have to give any advice; you just have to listen, maybe hold her hand.

Thank you anon, I feel like that's probably what I'd like if I were in her shoes too, so that's probably the best way to go.

I doubt she needs people 'giving her advice' right now too. :

If you want to offer her support but don't know what to say, write it down first and keep rewriting it until it sounds right to you. Then say it to her.

To start you off I would say something like. "Hey [Name] I know we're not as close as you are with [Other coworker she's staying with] but I know you're having a very hard time and I just want you to know I'm here for you. If there's anything I can do to help you out right now I would love to do it. Know you can come to me if you need to. I really am sorry for your situation right now and hope things get better quickly."
