Funny enough I've been kind of thinking of it since MIB III. The looks J was throwing at K sometimes, the "that's MY partner right there!", the joyful way he went to hug K even as K was tazering his ass...

Yeah, MIB III was the movie that finally kicked that ship fully to life for me. I didn't ship them at all except in a platonic mentor/mentee fashion after the first movie, and while the second movie sparked a slight interest (the way that J couldn't settle for any of the intermittent partners, and how desperately he wanted K to come back to MIB permanently) I was also thinking that it came off as J having some 'commitment/midlife regret' issues and looking back on his initial partnership with K through nostalgia glasses.

But the way that Will Smith played J in MIB III reached into my brain and welded a retroactive slash filter to their interactions throughout the entire franchise, because DAMN. The creative forces behind that movie could not have made it seem more like J was in love with K and in slowly weakening self-denial about it if they'd tried.
