I don't get the appeal with the Hobbit, either. It felt like any old generic adventure story. The characters weren't interesting at all, they were all pretty one-dimensional and having 12 almost identical dwarves didn't help. It was just descriptions of their traveling and OH incident here and there.

I tried LotR and quit after one chapter.
