Dark Lord of Derkholm secret! I love this book!

But, yeah, I agree with you, and that's why it's one of my favorite books. :)

Dark Lord of Derkholm! I love this book, I used to borrow the library's copy repeatedly. (Calette is my favourite, but I have a type. Donatello is my favourite Ninja Turtle, too. But gadgeteer genius griffin will never not be cool).

And yeah, Derk's breakdown was epic and heartbreaking. It wasn't even your standard half-way dignified breakdown, either, he went and sat in a literal pigsty because he just flat didn't give a shit anymore. And manages to scare the shit out of people even while being a stinking, grieving mess:

“Loss?” said Derk. “People? I’ve lost my wife and my son. I saw the griffin who was a son to me shot down by your soldiers. My human daughter and my griffin daughter are missing. And you talk to me of sixteen hundred tourists who aren’t even dead!”

Derk was awesome. Mad as a hatter at times, but nice and kind and awesome.

"...But nice and kind and awesome."

I think that's part of why his break down scared people. They were so used to him being nice, and trying to be accommodating that when he started showing a bit of [well deserved] temper it showed how far he'd been pushed by it all.
