In the end, Peeta had to. He had to go through the same experience that Katniss went through in order for them ending up together to make sense. Because they went through the same thing, only Peeta would be able to bring Katniss out of her PTSD state at the end of the trilogy. Anyone else, Katniss could have simply said, "You don't know what I am going through. You didn't go through it." Peeta went through the Games twice. He was tortured. He lost his family. All like Katniss.

Maybe OP ships Katniss with Haymitch?

Yeah, perhaps you're right.

OP here, I have a strange progression for shipping in this series. In the first book it was Katniss/Cinna. Second book Katniss/Gale. Third book I just sorta went along with Katniss/Peeta because it was obvious that's where it was leading, until the last paragraph which actually made me appreciate it for what it was.

I just love Katniss and Haymitch for their interaction. They played off each other wonderfully, read one another without having to speak, and yet they were so snippy and sarcastic with each other.

Me too. I don't ship them or anything, but I love them together--one of my favorite moments is after they win the first time and he hugs her and says in her ear "nice job, sweetheart." He is covering up such intense relief there with his sarcasm! Haymitch is a boss.

I have to admit, I didn't read the source material. That said, I really dislike the idea that X and Y will be perfect together if only they suffer horribly together. It certainly doesn't sound healthy. (It sort of sounds like dating within your support/therapy group...)

Plus, people suffer though and deal with horrible traumatic things, including PTSD, with the help of people who weren't "there" and don't have similar experiences all the time. Those same people can also go on to be happily married to people who weren't "there" with them and didn't suffer with them. Happens all the time.

But Katniss isn't such a person. She can't and don't want to speak with 'normal' people because she thinks she needs to be strong or later she simply becomes catonic. She isolates herself and only Peeta who lived through similar pain can reach her.

Exactly.

You got what I was trying to say. Thank you.

I understand that that is probably what happened in the actual series but it breaks my brain a little. There's this awful implication that, unless someone has the exact same experiences as Character Y, no one will ever be able to understand Character Y or help Y with their Things.

...It's just such a narrow view of humanity's capacity for compassion and empathy.

There's no such implication in the series. There are hints of other survivors who deal in different ways, it's just Katniss who reacts that way. Plus she didn't get with Peeta because he went through the same things she did, she got together with him because after going through these horrible things he was still able to look past it and to the future, unlike her.

There's also the fact that Haymitch going in would have also necessitated him telling Peeta all about District 13 and the details of the rescue plan. He tells Peeta more that Katniss, but I'm not sure he'd be willing to tell him that much.
