No. What you are probably smelling is more of a dietary cultural thing. Like for example, Americans of Indian background that have been here for generations smell like every other American. While Indians from India smell different from them. Why? Because the Indian American's diet is more likely less spicy and rich in things like garlic and curry, which is common in Indian cuisine because their diet is more likely stereotypical American; steak, corn, potatoes, sandwiches, etc. And these things, garlic and curry, will make your skin and breath smell a certain way. (You eat enough garlic and the stench of garlic will literally come out of your pores because of the way your body metabolizes the food.)

So, if a Swede were to move to India and ate what the locals ate and only what the locals ate then soon, that Swede will smell like a local. Like I said, it has nothing to do with race and everything to do with dietary culture.

Well said.

So why does it seem like black Americans often smell different than white Americans?

Cocoa butter

The use of it as a skin cream is way more popular in the African American community than in the non-African American community. It has a strong, distinct odor. That's probably what you are smelling.

Yes, this. Also might be the variety of hair salves and oils most of the girls and women I grew up with used on their scalps.

Different person here.

- They also might have specific cultural foods they eat.
- They probably use different skin and hair products because they have different skin and hair needs.

Ugh, an old couple my parents are friends with had this thing where they ate a lot of garlic for health reasons and they reeked of it.
