How is that even possible?

...I can't believe my first thought was, "Yes, it's not an American kid!"

Oh America hasn't been the fattest country for a while now. Mexico was the first large country to top it, statistically, but several smaller ones have obesity rates upwards of 70%, and the Middle East is not far behind (actually, the obesity rates in women in several Middle Eastern countries - such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE - are higher than those of the US).

Despite the dietary advice of the clinic he gained a further 18 pounds.

Despite the success of the operation the report notes that after the surgery the parents missed follow-up appointments: "The parents of the child did not comply with the provided instruction/s and more often showed a tendency to miss appointments and hence a regular time bound follow up was not possible."

Great parenting there. That poor kid is fucked. The operation will help only for a little while and soon he'll be in even worse shape.

IDK, it seems like at that age the parents would have to be actively stuffing him with too much food to get this result. I mean, he's two. It's not like they'd have to go that far out of their way to prevent him from gorging constantly on his own. I wonder whether they've tested the kid for glandular problems?

Praader-Willi syndrome?

Possibly. I've also heard of at least one person who spent years exercising and almost starving herself and still kept gaining weight. Turned out she had a tumor pressing on her pituitary gland. When the tumor was removed, the weight problem vanished.

He probably does, but there's a problem with obese patients where doctors wave off checking for contributing factors other than diet and exercise. Gastric bypass is no doubt just a bandaid on that kid's problem, because I've seen a lot of chubby toddlers whose parents constantly bribed them with candy bars in my day and none of them could get that big even if they were desperately trying to.

Damn, there's something really wrong with the poor kid to keep gaining weight like that. Hope the surgery helps
