Lyrics you hate from songs you like

There's always one. The rest of the song is great, but one line is so cheesy or badly rhymed or just plain absurd that it brings the rest down. Share 'em with me!

I have a few hymns that aren't explicitly Christian but for one or two lines. I love the songs, but I'm pagan, and that feels odd.

For this, my solution is to just kinda adjust the context.

For example: my family's Buddhist and had very little exposure to Christianity when I was young, so it always feels a little out there when it's mentioned. However, Buddhist tradition has the idea of Bodisattvas, which are people who became enlightened and could have entered nirvana if they wanted to, but instead decided to be reborn as humans to teach and help other people. There's loads of them scattered throughout Buddhist scripture, like saints and Biblical figures in Christianity, but different segments of Buddhism sometimes focus on specific ones more than others. At the same time, a lot of Buddhists are very open to the idea that other religious figures like Jesus or Muhammad were Bodisattvas, even if we don't believe they were The One and Special Greatest Person.

I'm not familiar with Paganism, so I don't know if you have any equivalent concepts, but just throwing that out there.

There are a lot of Pagan religions that have divine sacrifice, or resurrection, or a deity of compassion and brotherly love, but mine actually doesn't, that I can think of. I prefer the Irish pantheon, which doesn't have a Christ-like figure. In any case, my preferred patrons certainly aren't.

For the most part it's fine. It really only becomes a problem when there's actual name dropping. I'm fine with "my god" or "you" and the like, but an actual "Jesus" or "Christ" doesn't really mesh with my beliefs.

I feel like that with our national anthem. It's okay until the "all thanks to God part" and some outdated sexist lines. I've privately switched the sexes around for so long now that I have to try really hard if I want to sing it like it was intended.

I don't even really like the song, but that one Nickleback song that has the line "like a paperback novel." My brother and I found that line fucking hysterical when we were kids and we'd add it to the end of every line in the whole song, and other songs songs too. The way he sings it- it just hangs at the end of the lyric awkwardly and it makes me laugh so hard.

Oh, and that Grace Potter and the Nocturnals song, " Oh La La," I think it's called. I love the lyrics before (well, I actually only love "if I was a blade I'd shave you smooth" because it's weirdly intimate, sexy and threatening at the same time), but ugh. The rest sucks sucks so bad. And I love her voice too, but her songs kind of suck.

Blurred Lines. All of it.

The beat is so fucking catchy, though, so I listen to it whenever it comes on the radio anyway. :/

This. I wish the thing was sung in a language I don't speak, because the lyrics make me lose all enjoyment of the music. Ditto that other song by Robin Thicke ("girl give it to me" repeated ad nauseum) and Taylor Swift's "Trouble."

"I'll give you somethin big enough to tear your ass in two"

From Blurred Lines. Like, Jesus, T.I. You couldn't come up with something better than MY DICK IS SO BIG, YO.

1 in 10 Nirvana songs has something really strange thrown in it for no particular reason. But it's only something you notice if you're not used to it, so I don't really mind or even notice anymore. But it was one of the things that put me off them until a few years ago.

Everything You Want by Vertical Horizons.

I haven't heard that song is so very long but it came on the radio recently and I was like, "Hey! I know this song! I liked it when I was a kid." And then I listened to the lyrics and was like, "Dude... get the fuck over yourself." Dude sounded like the stereotype of a freaking "Nice Guy" so much I had to wonder if that's what he was going for because it was so perfect.

the song that's either supernatural or v. wrong

(Anonymous) 2013-09-28 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
So VIXX has this song 'hyde'. Their concept for the album was 'supernatural', and the song was intended to be specifically from the viewpoint of jekyll/hyde, but if you take away that context it's a song about an abusive relationship ("It wasn't me last night who said those horrible things, that was a different person, I'm not a bad person!")

I love the song though, such catchy dance-pop, and the choreography of the dance is brill, the way it shows duality.

also wtf is a 'smoky girl'?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-28 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
I flove this song and I'm usually cool about using language in creative new ways but for some reason this drives me nuts

does it mean she's mysterious? she has smokey eye makeup? she's just been in a house fire? does not compute.

Most of the Backstreet Boys' numbers. They had great catchy tunes and nice harmony, but lyrics that sound like they were hastily slapped together by underpaid, unimaginative teenagers.

"Mais où" by Stress, where he just rants about the media distorting his words all the time and it's great and it's catchy but gosh it has that one line where he gets deffensive for using a homophobic slur "I use the language of the street, the meaning has shifted, it's not a drama, those LGBT people who protested it don't understand anything' and it just ruins the whole song boo

Eunhyuk's rap from SJ-M's "Perfection." "Let me show you all my bling bling and all my kicks, kicks, baby dance with me." so awkward....
