So, about the possible U.S. government shutdown...

(Anonymous) 2013-09-28 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I'm an intern on Capitol Hill and one of the staffers told us that if the government shuts down, the interns will have to do a lot of what the staffers normally do, since only the most essential personnel will be around, but shit still has to get done.

I don't know whether to be elated or terrified...

I vote elated! You'd be busting your ass for your country in an unprecedented moment in US history.

Although the staffer was probably being a little facetious. I've known staffers in my state gov who work without pay for extra hours, or whole extra days that they weren't scheduled for.

Not that unprecedented.

And if you're furloughed, you're not allowed to work.

Check with the person in charge of the internship. Considering that employees are not allowed to volunteer to work unpaid, I'm guessing there are rules against making interns do the work. Essential personnel should include the personnel to do the stuff which absolutely has to get done right now now now now. Everything else, they can get it after they fund the damn government.

Oh, god, especially if your job in any way involves making life easier for Congress. Nobody should make life easier for Congress during a government shutdown.

Members of Congress should have to power a generator by pedaling a stationary bike if they want to keep the lights on in their fancy office building. And they should be made to live on disgusting soy cheeze.

OP

The thing is, I'm only going to be working the same hours as usual, so if I, within those hours, get to do actual interesting difficult stuff instead of running errands and organizing mail and photocopying...:D :D :D :D :D I wouldn't miss it for the fucking world. I shouldn't be glad if the government shuts down, but...I will be? Just a bit?

I'm just really scared of looking dumb or inconveniencing someone. They wouldn't actually trust me with serious essential-personnel work, of course..

The thing is? People are being inconvenienced as a whole by the government shutting down so...well. You're happy!times are *already* going to be inconveniencing people.

(bitter federal employee from before)

Well, the situation is putting people in a whole hell of a lot of trouble. Technically their being happy about the situation isn't going to make any more trouble than there already is.

It's just... you should not get to stop paying your employees and then have an unpaid intern do the work. You should not get to do that. Ever.
