There's really not so much rape in yaoi as japanese cultural conventions that americans don't get.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-28 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
I read plenty of yaoi comics where the characters explicitly called what was done rape and there were whole story arcs where the victim would decide to forgive their rapist and they'd live happily ever after...or continue to hate their rapist but lose the battle with Stockholm Syndrome and they'd live miserably ever after, either way. Few comics I encountered were unaware of their tropes, but that didn't mean they weren't gonna ride that rape horse into the sunset anyway.

I don't think we've read the same comics then.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-28 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Same anon as above. Damn, sorry if that came off as clipping, I was checking another tab meanwhile and it wasn't my intention in the least.

I'd be open to some suggestions. I love the visual format but the rapey aspects of what I've read has been a huge turn off. Recs?

Would you be so kind as to tell me what you've read, first?

the people who think junjou romantica and okane ga nai and koi suru bou kun are representative of the whole genre

lol

(Anonymous) 2013-09-28 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
Hey now, I like Junjou Romantica. And when Usagi-san apologized, Misaki stated that he was never really against it, just too caught up in the 'embarrassment at enjoying OMG SEX!' trope that the Japanese love. It shows up a lot in hentai, too.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-28 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow all I got for this is ugly laughter. Vocal Junjou fans are always great for that.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-28 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess asking for arguments from blind haters is too much.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-28 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, because we're all Americans here.

I'd agree though that many of more recent BL are moving on from "dub-con/rape situations turning into love" trope. It's not nearly as representative of the genre as it used to be.

My father is Japanese and my mother is British.
Please enlighten me why I shouldn't shun ~cultural conventions~ that imply that rape is love or that victims will learn to enjoy it? Btw, that's not strictly a Japanese cultural convention, that's just rape culture and isn't limited to Japan.
"Oh the Japanese, so different from us. You just don't get them"

Can't decide if you're slightly racist or just a weeaboo.

You and Jack Thompson would get along great.
