I am wigging out because I'm going to my first-ever con tomorrow and I'm going to be on my own for pretty much the whole morning.

Any advice for a first-time congoer, f!s?

Examine the area of the convention beforehand so you know the layout and where you're going. Have a schedule the morning of. If it's a big con, line up early. (My first Dragoncon, I waited an hour in a line wrapped round a hotel for Shatner, got up to the ballroom and it was full.) Bring packed lunch- the food vendors are usually crowded and expensive.

Thank you! I hadn't thought of a packed lunch, that's a really good idea.

I go to a con every year with my sisters and my niece and we buy groceries for the four/five days. It saves a bunch of money. :)

Are you cosplaying or not? I find it's easier to talk to people when I'm in cosplay.

If you wanna take a picture of someone in cosplay, ask first. Don't interrupt them if they look like they're in a hurry. Don't touch anyone without permission. Don't touch anyone's cosplay without permission, a lot of it breaks off easily.

Shower. Bring deodorant. Bring a small towel in case you get really sweaty.

Artist's Alley is where you go to buy prints. By all means, it's okay to look at someone's work and decide to look around some more before you buy anything, but don't stand there forever looking through stuff, taking up the artist's time and keeping other people from seeing anything and then not buy anything.

The Dealer's Room is where you go to buy merchandise. They're usually near each other.

If you are in a largeish fandom, try to ask around if there are going to be any meetups/photoshoots/midnight draw parties. Those are awesome. Especially the draw parties. Even if you don't draw, they're great for conversation.

When you get your schedule (when you check in), go through and circle any panels or performances you want to see. Make sure you know where they are ahead of time and that they don't conflict. Sometimes you'll get there and they'll be like "Oh, we're showing this one instead" and that's a huge bummer.

Bring some healthy snacks because con food is super expensive. OH AND BRING WATER.

Thank you!
I will be cosplaying, which is at least half of why I'm so nervous. I have no idea how to talk to people while in cosplay. Oh well, I picked a minor character from obscure source material, I might not even be recognized as a cosplayer. (And I'm not naming the fandom or the character because I might incriminate myself.)

Someone might recognize it and love you for it. And hey, I like a lot of costumes I'm not familiar with! You're probably at the con right now so I hope you're having fun.

Don't smoke weed and expect to actually show up on time.

Or at all.

Last time I smoked weed I was three hours late to a date (at a con, no less) with my then-girlfriend. This was also the day I had planned to pop the question.

She made me choose between the weed and her.

I'm happily married.

Well, I don't think that's a problem that's going to give me much trouble, but thank you anyway. Glad to hear that you're happily married!

'mkay. Haven't got that problem myself.
