A lot of people on my LJ flist have decided LJ sucks now, so they're leaving. It's totally their decision and I hope they're happy wherever they go next, but here's the thing - if they miss the way LJ was before, why things they wish were still being posted, or reply to other people's fandom related posts, stuff like that? LJ will only be how it was before if people start making it that way again.

...I'm sorry. I'm just surprised people are still there.

Dude, there are a ton of comms that didn't leave LJ so is it *really* that shocking people still use it?

I only know of one that didn't leave and I don't keep up with it so, yes, it was shocking to me.

LJ will never be how it was before. Things change, it's part of life.

That is what I wonder about too. I thought most went to tumblr? (I just can't be bothered with all the Shiny!™, but DW doesn't seem much more active to me. Besides I'm mostly fine with the now more sedate LJ milieu.)

Except a lot of the people who are necessary for making LJ the way it was again have left because of the constant, annoying changes to its UI and design. Until that changes, they won't go back. I certainly won't, and at this point I don't think I ever will, because I've found a nice niche elsewhere.

A lot of it has to do with how it's run, though. Prone to DDOS attacks, full of spam bots, annoying comment pages. Personally I prefer dreamwidth and I'd like it if more people came here. I understand missing it, though.

In some of those cases, though, their main problem seems to be it's not the same kind of fandom space it was before, and I think they're absolutely right, but they're saying they want more things they're not producing themselves.

I wish people would come to DW too, because I think the attacks, bot, and quite honestly poor handling of certain issues initially drew away a lot of the fandom. DW is more like LJ ten years ago in design, so why not in fandom too?

No. LJ will never be what is was, I am sorry. After Russia bought it, it quickly went downhill. With the outages + spam bots + better alternatives, LJ will not be making a comeback. Sorry.

Coming to DW to complain about people leaving LJ....I don't think you'll find much support here.

This is pretty much my reaction when I read that kind of comment. Wanting something and being able to produce it aren't the same thing...it just seems like fandom forgets that a lot.

So you're mocking people who, for whatever reason, can't write because...they're sad that people who can/do are leaving because a fandom is dying?

I'm mocking people who go "well why can't they do it themselves?" as though writing a whole fandom by yourself is easy. I certainly don't see the complainer doing it!

You can't turn back time. What has happened has happened. The past is and will always be the past, will always be a memory, and cannot be recreated before our eyes as though it were anything else.

Yeah, i'm a little confused by the whole 'leaving LJ' thing. Tumblr isn't an option, you can't post and comment and converse there like you can with LJ.

And DW is fine, but most of the comms i read are still on LJ and *not* on DW, so....where are they going?

I'm on LJ and intend to stay. I crosspost from DW and all, but until all my comms leave? I only read LJ. And a lot of people have been writing more, posting more, being more proactive there, plus there are still a ton of challenges, big bangs and memes going around, so....

But people can't make it the way it was before because the site isn't run by them. Folks didn't start leaving just because, they bounced because of a bunch of little changes in the way LJ was managed. And, I mean. It's kinda funny to post this here on a massive comm that abandoned LJ for greener pastures itself.

I don't think I illustrated my point very well.

People on my friends list have left saying nobody posts fandom stuff like they used to, when they don't really do that themselves. Yes it's because they don't know if there's anything to post to, but if people say they'd like it they can try. I'd love it if people would talk about fandom again.

This has nothing to do with DDOS, Strikethrough 2006, anything like that. I know other people here may have had that problem and left because of it. They're not who I'm talking about.

All of my fandom spaces have moved to DW over the last two years, so I'm always surprised when anyone mentions still using LJ. I've been there maybe twice in the last year to see something that wasn't on DW and LJ just looks really bad when it's working, which isn't all that often it seems.

idk, oddly enough my LJ comms and LJ friends activity doesn't seem to have really changed. We all just kind of roll with anything that happens.

But then we're not stuck on some idea of what way LJ should be, since it seems to differ drastically depending on which community you're on

idk, I'm still over there. Not as active as I used to be, because I'm now here and on Tumblr as well, but the place isn't dead. The DOS outages are annoying, but not as bad lately as they were for a while there, and I've gotten used to the changes or found ways around them.

Honestly, though, for practical purposes I find the differences between LJ and DW almost negligible, and often forget which site I'm on at a given moment.
