I suspect because there just aren't that many into it - and those that are, are hesitant to touch it since well...A *lot* of what you find in them is influenced by Japanese culture so it's a little hard to tell what parts are sexist and what's just the culture at times.

Yep this is me. Though I doubt there's a very clear line between what parts are sexist and what parts are just the culture, it's not like my culture is any better. It's just less glaringly obvious to me.

All cultures are exactly the same?

Wrong bruv.

No, not exactly the same? But as someone who's never been there I'd feel like an idiot saying "Japan is sexist and Canada is not!".
I'd say my culture has sexist elements that many people blindly accept, and at least with my own I'm in a much better position to see how my culture and sexism are related. Like being able to tell when something is satirical, you know?
Also I just realised the original anon was talking about feminists who watch anime, and I've barely watched any. Just to be clear!

I feel pretty comfortable suggesting a culture may have more endemic problems with sexism then my own.

Like no culture is entirely free of sexist elements obviously, but I've seen far too many people pretend that we don't get to judge say Saudi Arabia because cultural relativism, and that we can never make an objective assessment.

And fuck that nonsense. It's backwards to sit about pretending that everything is always of equal weight and we can never make a clear cut judgement.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-28 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. I'm so sick of people claiming it's horrible to point out problems in other cultures. Maybe if they're just criticizing it because it's different, that's an issue, but if they're critical of their own culture as well, they're using their brain. Just because it's "culture" doesn't mean it's right or free from criticisms. It's downright dangerous to afford something that level of protection from judgement.

I think I agree with you, I'm just reluctant to get into anything too specific about anime because it's easier to make a clear cut judgement about sexist laws and abuse in Saudi Arabia than cultural output and it's meaning. I've only seen a few anime series, I've never studied or lived in Japan. I think my opinion beyond "annoying stereotypes, couldn't watch" would be pretty vapid. What bothers me isn't necessarily what actually matters when people know the culture/context/history.

+1

(Anonymous) 2013-09-28 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Fuck that line of thinking. If your culture allows women to be put down and treated worse than dirt then your culture should change. Fuck your culture.

If a culture allowed slavery would you say the same thing? Of course not. You would be up in arms. So why can they treat women how ever they want and get away with it?

If we all act out according to what we all think is right or wrong, I think there will be a hundred more wars on this earth because of it, and I don't think that is worth losing a life over.

Just my two cents.

[personal profile] ill_omened 2013-09-29 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
But that's acting according to what you think is right or wrong.

You believe that you're carrying out the most just action.

Otherwise you wouldn't give a shit.

That's pretty much a great reason to go to war though. Far better then "want their resources" which is more often the reason.

Also, a lot of times lives are being lost right now? So numbers game is silly.

Culture. Sure

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2013-09-28 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)

It's okay though. They'll love it in the end. And they'll get it in the end! And every other part!

Of course they were only protesting cause their culture really discourages women enjoying sex. You just gotta keep going till they break down and admit they love it!

What do you expect Americans to SAY about that? Sure, it's awful, but it's not like its creators would listen if we threatened to stop buying their products--they're made for a Japanese audience, sold to a Japanese audience, and it needs to be the Japanese who protest with their wallets.

they shouldn't be afraid to say something though. Doesn't mean you are going to go spam authors till they change their ways. But that doesn't mean you couldn't make others aware of something problematic. Or that if you do buy it you write it off as "oh their culture"

I'd rather have a bunch of fictional girls molested by fictional tentacles for some neckbeard to happily jerk off to.
