Princess Tutu

Kino's Journey

Utena

Twelve Kingdoms

Vampire Princess Miyu

The last two are arguable, since the leads do occasionally fall into the tropes you said you don't care for, but:

Brother, Dear Brother - The lead Nanako is sweet and innocent, but she loses that innocence quickly in the face of all that happens to her over the course of the series, ending up with her being a strong, independent woman, rather than the passive little girl she is at the beginning. If you don't like melodrama, though, you may not be able to make it that far.

Rose of Versailles - Once again, the lead Oscar has some tsundere traits, occasionally played up for melodrama, but she's a very strong woman, even in her "dere" moments.
