That's one word limit used to define the word. Others are 150, 200 and 300. All have been called drabbles in various fandom places online for the last almost 15 years. Before that, fanzines and BBSes often classified anything 500 words or less as a drabble.

tl;dr: there is no end all, be all word count to classify a work as a drabble

Many people use "drabble" to mean fics under 500 words - it's not some new development in fandom.

Nope, not new at all, but really aggravating for some people, myself included.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Not to be rude (okay, maybe a little) but that sounds like it's a personal problem.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-30 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! This literally made me LOL.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-30 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
How is it aggravating though? I mean, you can just call your fic something else. o_O

(Anonymous) 2013-09-30 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
Why don't you call your fic something else?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-30 09:12 am (UTC)(link)
Because they don't have the problem.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-30 09:14 am (UTC)(link)
Why should I do that, though? Why invent a new word when there's already the perfectly fine "drabble" for me to use?
