People need to stop saying this.

It's such a ridiculous patronising thing.

Look you're right, Islam is no more violent than any of the other abrahamic religions, but neither is it less. Point this out, don't throw out a nonsense bit of advertising.

...If you want to get technical all the abrahamic religions *are* peaceful, and preach peace. If the people following those religions practice those teachings is a whole different issue.

If you want to get all technical as overall works they're written by a host of different authors with different intentions, and therefore a complete mess of different and often completely oppositional teachings.

Technically all the bibles of those different religions have pretty hateful things in them. Kill nonbelievers, it's okay to rape women if they don't scream loud enough, anyone who doesn't believe in me will die a painful fiery death, etc. (And that's in all of the big three's holy books)

They were written by a bunch of different people, about something that doesn't exist. It'd be nice for once if people did practice what they preached, though, and only stuck to the non-insane homicidal bullshit passages.

Well... while I admit as I'm not as up on the language cultures of different religions as I should be, the title may be more because of the actual language Islam started out in, rather than a descriptive moniker.

Islaam comes from the Arabic word "salaam", which means "peace". (It's also derived from "salam", which depending on whether you're using it as a verb or a noun, pretty much boils down to the word, "submit"-- as in, submission before God, so...)

I agree, they're all pretty terrible when you look at their holy texts. If you point out how the majority of the followers of the religion act in horrible ways, some will point to their holy texts and say "they're not doing it right! THIS is how it should be done, look at what it said originally". And yet, when you point out the problems with the basics of their religion, they say "it's thousands of years old, naturally things have changed".

You can't pick and choose like that, and it drives me nuts.
