Pretty much this.

If you can't afford the game (or the console/handheld/etc to play it on), aren't good at games, simply don't enjoy playing them yourself, or just know you'll never get around to it otherwise but still want to see what the game is all about, then LP's are great.

I love playing games but there are certain titles I know I'll never, ever play, so the only way I'm going to experience them is through LP's. And that's totally fine.
