A drabble means "a paragraph not worth reading"

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously, I don't read that shit. Drabbles are just very short stories, and some people are into that, some people aren't. Only people who are really anal absolutely refuse to deal with a drabble that isn't 100 words.

No. A drabble is saying something in a specific number of words. It's a style. Rather like certain kinds of poetry or short fiction. Working within very rigid limits forces people to be really creative in ways they wouldn't have been if they had the freedom to say what they wanted in as many words as they pleased.

Of course, Poe's Law means that a lot of drabbles will be crap, but the style has a ton of merit nonetheless. There's nothing wrong with normal short fiction, and you can do things in 274 words that you can't do in 100, but the strict format of drabbles is both challenging to write and pleasing to read, like the strict format of a sonnet.

As for your subject line, again, no. Twilight is about 500 pages long. Hemingway's story "For sale: Baby shoes. Never worn." is six words long, yet has twenty times the depth and weight.
