It's been a long time since I've read any of the books, but wasn't the original Holmes mostly just a loner with some weird habits. That's why I'm always boggled by the BBC Sherlock fans who go on about how accurate Benedict Cumberbatch's portrayal is. Because, uh, it isn't. At all. It's an interpretation, no more 'accurate' than the Holmes from Elementary or the Holmes from the Guy Ritchie films.
