If you hated Whedon's other works then you would probably despise this show, OP. I used to like his shows but at this point I'm getting sick of his cookie cutter characters, especially the "quirky" ones. The plot itself was just bland, and I couldn't bring myself to care about any of the characters except Coulson and Maria, who were already established characters. Everyone else sucked: you had the typical retired badass pulled out of retirement (except it's so much cooler and original now guys, because it's a woman!!11), the gruff guy who "doesn't play well with others (yawn), the "quirky" scientists that we're supposed to find endearing but are really annoying as hell, and of course, the "witty" self-insert fangirl character who naturally is able to hack into top-secret databases and is ~oh so talented~, which is apparently used as justification for Coulson to recruit a civilian into a top secret government organization. I hesitate to use the term "Mary Sue" because it's usually just shorthand for "female character I don't like," but honestly, I've seen that character type in so many fanfics its ridiculous. As far as the plot itself goes, it was very bland and uninteresting (imo). Without getting into spoilers, I was hoping they would go the "darker" route at the end, but it wrapped up in this predictable, vanilla way. Bleh. Save yourself the aggravation and watch Sleepy Hollow instead.
