Yeah, that bothers me too. Especially when I think it's warping the character. (i.e. It's none of my business if someone thinks tame stuff they'd do is villainous, but when they're attributing it to the Joker, I'm going to back-button if I even bothered to read.)

The other thing I really can't stand is when a canon sets up some trait as overwhelmingly important and desirable and its fandom responds by falling all over itself to prove it's full of people with said trait. There were places associated with Death Note that I wouldn't go near because discussion was of secondary importance, while everyone's real point seemed to be trying to impress people with how smart they were. It's obnoxious enough when you have a few people doing that, but when most of the commenters are not-so-secretly dying to be mistaken for L, it's a disaster.
