I agree with anon above, it really depends on who you're making friends with.

And some of us have had the opposite experience, where the people we knew IRL left us and our online friends were always there.

I have probably more IRL friends now then online friends, but my online friends are some of my oldest friends and helped me get through rough times.

I think the general rule is just that either online or IRL you need to be careful and try to find people with similar morals to your own.
